But what is it about your profile that gets the most attention?
I’ve been telling you guys since this blog started that your picture was the most important part of your profile.
And while I knew it was probably the single most important thing, I had no evidence besides the work I’ve done with the hundreds of guys who have come to me to get their profiles redone. (Though THAT seems like pretty strong evidence.)
Well, OKCupid just came out with a study that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that it IS your online dating picture that women focus on.
Cupid has carried out a massive survey of more than 30,000 members to find out exactly where on their profile they should be making the most effort, and the results have shown definitive proof of exactly what it is that men and women look for in a profile first and foremost.
A Great Photo is Crucial
Our survey revealed that, yes, having a brilliant profile photo is by far the single most important and most attractive element of all. Everyone serious about finding love online should make a real effort to ensure the picture they choose is just right.
A huge 41.53% men and an enormous 50.34% of women all chose this as the first thing they look for. To be precise…
This chart shows just how important having the right online dating profile pictures is.
So what makes a bad profile picture?
Clearly users want to avoid posting an image of themselves that will put people off, so Cupid decided to delve a little deeper into the minds of its users to find out precisely what it is that they should avoid when taking that crucial picture.
This survey revealed that 40.12% of women agree that the last thing they want to see in a man’s profile picture is ‘bad teeth’. So if men are missing a few incisors, haven’t brushed their teeth in a few years or were just blessed with crooked teeth it may be best for them to keep their mouths closed.
Interestingly for men, the majority decided that for them, a photo that ‘looks too professional’ is the thing most likely to put them off. 30% of men agreed, clearly deciding that an image like that makes them think the picture is a fake and that most likely the woman in reality is nothing like that at all, so won’t look at the profile any further. Ladies – keep it real!
Both men (13.28%) and women (14.66%) agreed however, that profile pictures where the person is clearly cut from an image from when they were with their ex partner (perhaps with an arm round the shoulder or half a face in the shot) is a definite turn off.Source.
